Christopher Nolan's film adaptation of The Odyssey opened in theaters on July 17.

Matt Damon plays Odysseus. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope. The budget ran to 250 million dollars, and Nolan shot the whole thing on IMAX cameras, the first film in history to do that from start to finish.

He filmed across Greece, Morocco, Italy, Iceland, and Scotland, using real terrain to build Homer's world. Real beaches. Real caves. Real coastlines. No soundstage oceans. No green screen cliffs.

As The Odyssey achieves impressive box office results, I cannot forget reading this line for the first time in the book:

"There is a land called Crete, in the middle of the wine-dark sea, a fair, rich land, begirt with water, and therein are many men, past counting, and ninety cities. They have not all the same speech, but their tongues are mixed."

I read that years before I ever set foot in Greece, and I remember trying to build the place in my head from nothing else.

Ninety cities on one island.

People speaking different tongues, mixed together, none of them agreeing on a single way to say the same thing.

Homer gave me that for free, long before I could afford the plane ticket.

Nolan never put Crete on screen. He didn't need to. Crete is one of the places Homer made immortal long before any camera existed, and Nolan's film has put Homer's entire world back into the cultural conversation.

That's the useful part for this business.

A major cultural moment can reopen a familiar destination before a single client ever asks about it.

Nolan creates the attention.

Homer supplies the emotional pull.

Crete gives the advisor somewhere less predictable to take the conversation.

Here's my read on Crete as a luxury destination, for what it's worth.

Elounda has quietly run a serious luxury hotel market there for decades, so this isn't Crete's first chapter in high-end travel.

What's changing is the scale and the spread.

IHG has added an InterContinental on the island and announced Vignette Collection and Kimpton properties.

The 220 million euro Ikos Kissamos opened in western Crete this year.

Santorini built its luxury identity around caldera views.

Mykonos built its around nightlife and beach clubs.

Crete has been building in more places at once, without settling on one formula the way the other two did.

For advisors, that's the opening.

Crete is large enough, and varied enough, that no single luxury script owns it yet.

And right now, the world Homer built around it is back in the conversation.

Athina Daskalaki has spent 25 years building experiences that start with the person, not the postcard.

In her words:

After 25 years in the travel industry, I realized one thing. Just as our fingerprints are unique, every traveler's needs are unique too. I don't simply create trips. I create human experiences my clients may not even know they wanted, because they didn't know they existed.

I have taken a 74-year-old scientist, who spent her life building laboratories for the US government, to a small village to touch clay for the first time. I have taken a governor to meet a shepherd and milk a goat. He arrived back at midnight. Three weeks later, he returned with his other two children.

These are moments where very successful, very busy, very tired people get to forget who they think they have to be, and simply become human again. That is what Crete offers, if you know where to look. That is what TAUTOTES was created for.
