Five lessons into this series, here's exactly where I am. Open rate: 58.9%. Click rate: 8.79%. Both excellent by any newsletter standard.
Inquiries from the lessons themselves: zero.
A year ago, that gap would have convinced me the whole thing was broken. It isn't. I was just watching the wrong number.
This week is part six, the last lesson in this course. It answers the question underneath all five before it: how do you actually know a newsletter is working, and what do you do once it is?
Objective: Learn to read the real signals of progress, and know what to do once they show up.
1. The metric that lies, and the ones that don't
Open rate and click rate measure attention. They tell you someone was curious enough to look. They don't tell you whether that person has started thinking of you as the expert they'd actually call.
High engagement with zero replies isn't failure. It's the early part of a longer curve. Attention has to build before trust does. Trust has to build before someone reaches out. Skipping straight from "they opened it" to "they should be emailing me" is like judging a first date by how nice the restaurant was.
2. What working actually looks like
A reply. A forward. A client mentioning something you wrote months ago, unprompted, in a completely different conversation.
These lag behind opens and clicks on purpose. A click costs someone two seconds of curiosity. A reply costs them admitting they need something. That's a much bigger ask, and it takes longer to earn.
3. What to do when it finally happens
When a reply or an inquiry does show up, don't treat it like a lucky accident. Treat it like graduation. The newsletter did the slow work of making you recognizable. The reply means someone is ready for the real conversation, the one a newsletter alone can't have with them.

Important Guardrail
Good metrics without inquiries don't mean it's broken. No inquiries for months doesn't mean it's time to quit either. Both readings are wrong, and both cause the same mistake: giving up on a newsletter right before it was about to start working. The compounding happens quietly, and it happens on its own timeline, not yours.
Outcome
A way to judge your newsletter that doesn't depend on getting a reply this month, and a plan for what to do the day one finally comes.
Action, with two worked examples
This week, stop checking your open rate. Instead, look back through your last three issues for anything that isn't a click: a reply, a forward, a comment from someone in person.
If there's nothing yet, that's normal at month two or three. Write down today's date. Check again in 60 days.
Wine and culinary Europe specialist: No replies yet after six issues. Instead of reading that as a dead newsletter, she notes it in her calendar for a 60-day check-in, and keeps publishing on schedule. Three months later, a past client forwards an issue to a friend planning a trip to Burgundy. That's the newsletter working. The forward, not the open.
Family multigenerational specialist: Same six issues, same silence. He keeps the buffer from Lesson 5 running and doesn't change a thing. In month four, a client he hasn't heard from in a year replies to say she's been meaning to book a trip like the one in a recent issue. The newsletter didn't do anything different that month. It just finally had enough time behind it.
Next week
That's six lessons. Next Monday, you get the entire system as one file, built to keep, revisit, and rebuild from whenever you need it.
